The Manchester Stories

It’s only when you’re asked to tell the history of Manchester, pictorially, that you realise what a remarkable city it is. In terms of its contribution to commercial, scientific and social breakthroughs. Such an occasion was our recent brief from Roomzzz, the aparthotel people. They had won a fiercely fought beauty parade, to have the privilege of turning the Corn Exchange Grade II listed building into their latest Roomzzz aparthotel. Complete with its 114 stylish apartments, mini kitchens and space to hang out, chill out and stretch out. Putting many of the standard hotel offerings to shame.

Our task was to tell the many faceted Manchester story, past and present, consistent with the Roomzzz brand personality of quirky, distinctive and eclectic. The multi-layered illustrations feature such iconic buildings as the Victorian, neo gothic Town Hall and strikingly modern, edifices such as the National Football Museum. The sons and daughters of the city are also present, including the peerless Tony Wilson, the inspiration behind the Haçienda, and the comedic trailblazer Caroline Ahern, both dearly departed and leaving their legacy to further enhance this remarkable city. We could go on, but instead take a look at the illustrations beautifully and painstakingly created by celebrated illustrator Katie Edwards. As there are approaching 100 individual pieces you would need to book a room in this magnificent building to see them all, but if you’re not planning an overnight stay in Manchester, here’s a selection of the superb illustrations.

With Roomzzz London Stratford opening in May and others in the pipeline they’ll be a full case study following this year.
